Jehovah Rophe

31 Days Day 15

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound.; to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; and to grant to those who mourn in Zion – to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified. – Isaiah 61: 1-3

Jehovah Rophe – Jehovah Heals, the Lord Your Health. Jesus is the Lord Your Health. He is the Great Healer of all things, and He holds healing from sin, physical ailments, emotional wounds, difficulties and scars of all kinds.

Come to Him and cast your cares, wounds, sickness and sin upon Him. He will heal you. Praise Him, bring glory to His name, for He is the Healer of all!

Thank you Lord for healing me of my sins and the scars they left behind. You are my health, the Great Physician. There is nothing in this world that compares to You!

God SEES You–and He Designed You to Be Seen

31 Days Day 14

God sees you. Wherever you are, He is there (Psalm 139). And He is El Roi, the God who sees all.

That can either be scary–or amazing! He sees us and still loves us, and still shows grace to us. He sees you in all that you do.

God also created marriage to be a mirror, or a reflection, of God’s relationship to us. Just as He sees us and still loves us, He wants us to see our husband–and still love him. And He wants us to be vulnerable before our husband, laid bare, and truly intimate.

This January, in these 31 days as we grow closer to God, I encourage you to also grow closer to your husband. Our spirituality and our marriage are very closely linked. When we are closer to God, we feel closer to our husband, and vice versa. So today, can you SEE your husband? Talk to him about who he is, what he loves, what he cares about, not just who will pick up the kids, who will chauffeur to hockey, who will buy the milk. See your husband. Take time to talk to him. Take time to reveal something to him. And take time to pray together to the God who sees all of your marriage–and still wants you to grow even closer.

Jehovah Jireh

31 Days Day 13

Provisions.

Look at this scenario for a minute:

Your small child arises from sleep burning up with a fever. You take one look at her and know that she is sick. You immediately go to the cabinet, grab the medicine, and begin to administer to her what she needs in order to get better. She may not like the taste of it. She may even fight you for a minute, but in the end, she takes it knowing that this medicine is what makes the fever go away.

Do you see any relation to that story in regards to provisions that God makes for us? For some reason we do not see God as Jehovah Jireh–The Lord Provides. We tend to think we can provide on our own whatever needs we may need. We might even turn down God’s provisions or turn our nose up at them because they are not the provisions that we want.

However, God is Jehovah Jireh–The Lord Provides. Just like the little girl taking the medicine, we may not like what God has provided or how He has provided it, but in the end, He provided. That is what He does. He did it for Abraham with the ram. He did it for Moses when he killed Pharoah’s army. He did it for us when He sent Jesus to die for our sins.

God is a Father to us. Like any parent, when you see your child in need, you look at what they are going through and decided if providing for them will help them or hold them back. God may not always provide you what you think you need, but He will provide what He knows you need.

So today, if you are angry with God because He has not given you something you thought you needed–count it joy that He knows what you need better than you do. If He did not provide it, it was because you did not really need it in the first place. Thank Him for providing only the things that will help you grow and mature as a daughter of the King.

Father, my Jehovah Jireh–thank You so much for the provisions You have made for me. Please forgive me for the times I have become angry with You for not giving me what I thought I needed or asked for. I realize Your provisions have always been best for me. Help me to look clearly at the things You allow for me and the things You do not. Help me to trust Your way of providing for me. When money is tight, help me to see the lesson I am to learn. When someone betrays my trust, help me to still see the good in that person. Lord, even though I may never understand why You do not provide some of the things I ask for, help me to trust that You above all else have my best interest at heart. You, Lord, are all the provisions I need. I love you! In Jesus’ precious name, amen.

Elohim – The Creator of All

31 Days Day 11

I begin this year, much like many others, opening my Bible to Genesis….the beginning of God’s written Word to mankind.  I come before Him longing to know Him in a deeper way this new year and realizing that I can only know Him through prayer and Bible study on a regular basis.

This isn’t a New Year’s resolution….this is a lifestyle.  You see, I was made in the image of God.  I’ve discovered that to know myself, I must know God.  Who is He?  What characteristics does He have that I need to be portraying?

The very first characteristic that we learn about God is that He is a creator.

I like that about Him and I see that characteristic in myself as I like to create things.  God is an artist.

He speaks and sunsets of unbelievable beauty are displayed for all to see.  He breathes and a baby moves, tickling the belly of a new mother.  He sighs and a gentle breeze cools a weary brow.  He thunders and nourishment is given to dry, parched land.

In the darkest winter, He is preparing beauty to spring forth.

I can’t create like He does.  I have to take brush to paint to create a sunset.  But He has given me talent, a small of piece of what He has and asks me to use it.  I can speak for His glory.  I can sigh with His comfort.  I can create and offer enjoyment, comfort, encouragement, and laughter.

So this year, I will seek Him, find Him, and emulate Him to the world around me….for His glory, for His purpose, in His image.

God, You are the Creator.  There is nothing without You.  Teach me to see You in everything.  To acknowledge Your existence, Your presence, Your handiwork as I go through my day.  Give me courage to use the talents that You have given to me to create for You in my own unique style.  Thank You, dear Lord, for loving me and wanting a relationship with me.  Thank You for making me like You.  May you find pleasure in what I do for You, in how I live for You.  In Your Son’s precious name, Amen.

Genesis 1:1….In the beginning….God created…..

Genesis 1:27…..He created him in the image of God….

Eternal

31 Days Day 10

About ten years ago, I attended a conference in Austin, Texas called The Great Hills Retreat.  It was a set-apart time in my life that God has used over and over since then–reverberating over my life, setting me free! It was there I met one of my heroes in the faith, Elisabeth Eliot–she is such a lady, such a woman of God.  She spoke truth over my life then and blessed me.

Also, I met another hero in the faith to me, Beth Moore. Today I also call her friend. Beth spoke a truth over my life that has changed and freed me in ways for which I can never thank her or repay her. She spoke of God being the I AM over my was, is and is to come. (You can find the message here at The God Who Was, Is and Is to Come, if you wish to hear it.)

The Eternal God, over all time, space and place–over each of us, our past, present and future–is our refuge.  He is able.  And He uses His ability to be powerful and steadfast–holding us together. He makes beautiful what we have made ugly.  He restores, renews and brings back to life that which was dead and useless.

The words Beth spoke in part, which still are changing me, was about our past and our sin–how to re-record over that past and allow God to use that past for victory over the enemy of our souls.  She said that we take the Word of God and apply it to our memory–our recordings that play and remind us constantly of choices we made.  But those recordings do not define us, no.  His Word defines us.  He is the One who calls us by name.  The Eternal God defines us.  So Beth spoke about how memorizing scripture has changed her life. My sisters?  It has changed my life, too. (You may want to join Beth, me and many others here, as we memorize scripture in 2011.)

I have a cup from that conference ten years ago.  It is a dainty cup of fine china and it bears this scripture, which speaks over my life still. May it speak over your lives today. May His word reverberate a joyful chorus over the noise of the enemy.

“The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.”  Deuteronomy 33:27a NIV

Lord, I thank You that You are Eternal.  Over all I was, all I am and all I will be–You hold everything together and love me, unwaveringly.  Father I ask that You will be our refuge and that underneath, Your Everlasting Arms will hold each of us together.  I pray that You will sustain us through the hard notes of life and that You will skip with us and dance with us during the joyful notes that run up and down the scale.  I ask that this year we will know You, our Eternal One, as friend.  I pray that You will place in each of us hearts that are willing–willing to allow Your Word to record over every dissonant note of our past and present. Help us to trust Your forgiveness and truth over each of our lives.  In Jesus’ Name I pray.

My Unchanging God

31 Days Day 8

Do you find change hard sometimes? I do. As I age, I know more and more friends and family who are dealing with health issues. I wish I could change this, but I can’t. Actually no one is promised a life without change. Sometimes change can be a good things. Seasons come and go.

Change is inevitable.

But one thing stays the same: our God is Unchanging.

Hebrews 13:8 reads

Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday, today and forever.

The Psalmist penned in Psalm 102:27,

But you remain the same, and your years will never end.

Almighty God, thank You that You are Unchanging. One look around at our world and I see change happening every day. Lord, may those going through hard change right now find hope in the One who never changes. Jesus, You remain the same even when everything and everyone else changes. It’s amazing to think Your goodness, grace and love will never end. What a comforting reminder for today. I love You, Lord.  I need You in this ever-changing world. In Your name I pray, Amen.

El Roi

31 Days Day 7

As a child, I remember thinking of God as the God who sees, El Roi.  I remember thinking that He saw me and loved me. Also, I remember thinking that what He saw caused Him displeasure for I was sinful. Perhaps also, He was waiting to “squash me” for my sin. Though it is true that I was sinful and still am sinful, I didn’t see God through the same lens as I do today–the lens that Jesus alone could bring.  He is the one who bears the reproach of my sin. He chose to see me and wear my every sin–then He conquered all sin–once and for all time! He came running after me.

Today I know God sees me–the good, the bad and the plain ugly.  Though He is saddened by my sinful choices–sometimes even my belligerent and willful sin–He also sees me as His own, beloved child.  He is cheering me on!  He understands what motivates me.  He is willing to change me, to meet me and chase me down to love me.  He will go the distance for me, just as He did for Hagar, when she ran away from Sarai.

You see Hagar, the servant, was pregnant with Abram’s first child (Genesis 16).  It was Sarai’s idea that Hagar go into lie with Abram. Then Hagar flaunted the fact that she was pregnant and Sarai was not–Hagar despised her mistress. Sarai told Abram and Abram told Sarai to do what she wanted. So Sarai mistreated Hagar and Hagar ran away.

Sounds like a lot of sin, doesn’t it? Then God met Hagar in the desert. He spoke truth over her. He told her how to live and what the future of her son would be. Then Hagar called God, “El Roi, the One who sees me.” She said I have seen the One who sees me.  Then she obeyed–returned to her mistress and bore Abram a son, Ishmael.

El Roi, the One who sees me and each one of us, I pray that this day we will allow you to speak Truth over what You see in each of us. I pray, LORD, we will see You, the One who sees us, in a right lens–knowing that you are FOR us. You are on our side and cheering us on.  I thank You, too, Jesus, that You chase us down and came running for us–that You still do today.  We are so thankful that You saw our sins and chose to bear them. We no longer wear or bear the reproach of them, for we are seen, known and loved by You–and that cannot be taken from us.  Praise Your Name!

El Olam, The Everlasting God

31 Days Day 6

El Olam, The Everlasting God, The Eternal God, the God who has no beginning and no end. His faithfulness and love will endure forever.

For a thousand years in your sight are but as yesterday when it is past, or as a watch in the night….The years of our life are seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty; yet their span is but toil and trouble; they are soon gone, and we fly away…So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom. Psalm 90:4, 10, 12

Father, You are The Everlasting God, You have no beginning or end. I am your creation, and as such I do have a beginning, and I will have an end just as all things on this earth. Thank You for every single moment You have given to me. Give me the strength I need each day, so that when my time on earth is through I may stand before Your eternal throne and hear you say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” It’s in You Son my Savior Jesus Christ’s name I pray. Amen.

El Shaddai

31 Days Day 5

I’m not sure why, but I tend to be one that remembers almost everything I ever received as a gift. I remember wedding presents, gifts from when I was a kid and gifts that people sent to me along the way just because. It’s important to this brain o’ mine. So I hold and treasure and remember each gift.

This morning, as I was singing in church, one verse in the refrain really captured my heart. It said, “He holds my world.” As I sang the words, I realized that one of the very most important things to me in the whole world is knowing not only that God has the whole world in His hands, but He has MY world in His hands–He is my El Shaddai, my All-sufficient One, able to be all that I need and cover each worry and care with Himself.

He knows…my heart concerns, my earthquakes, my emotions, and my world. Everything that I see and know and touch and experience–He is sufficient over. Everything that I care about, every one that I treasure–He is sufficient over. The past, present and future of who I am and what I face…they are in His Hands–and He is sufficient over it all.

God doesn’t just hold my world, He holds me. He sees me and cares about me. He is ever-present, ever-helping, ever my very own closest friend–He is sufficient over me.

I don’t know about you, maybe it doesn’t shake your world as it does mine, but the God of the Universe is my friend. On the days when I’m surrounded by friends and on the days when I feel friendless, He is there. He has given me and you the gift of Presence.

Lord, I thank You. You are my All-sufficient One, my El Shaddai. You are holding our worlds, our shattered, broken, crazy, angry, helpless, hurtful, scary, unstable, individual worlds. Father, that means the world to me, to us! For we are hanging onto Your promises and believing that above all You are FOR us, WITH us and You are ENOUGH. Thank you, El Shaddai, You are sufficient through and in and over and around.

Help us to be present with those we love, to hold their worlds with a loving heart. We are choosing to give the gift of presence this year to our families and friends–each one you bring on our pathway. Someday, they’ll remember and maybe even say, “She looked a lot like Jesus.”
